What a sectional dismantle actually involves

A dismantle is a tree removal done from the top down, in pieces, rather than in one go. There is no big hinge cut at the base and no clear drop zone. Instead a climber works up through the crown on rope and harness, takes the limbs off in manageable lengths, then works back down the stem cutting it into short blocks.

It is slower than straight felling and it costs more, but it is the only way to get a big tree out of the sort of garden most of us actually have. Shed on one side, greenhouse on the other, conservatory behind. Nearly all the removals we do around Congleton are dismantles for exactly that reason.

Rigging by rope, or bringing in a crane?

Rigging is the kit we use to control a piece of timber as it leaves the tree: lowering lines, blocks, pulleys, slings and a friction device at the base. The limb gets tied off above the cut, the cut is made, and the groundworker eases the rope out so the section comes down at walking pace. Done properly you barely hear it land.

A crane earns its money when rigging alone will not do the job safely. That usually means the timber is too heavy to lower off the tree, the anchor points are not sound enough to take the shock load, the tree is dead or badly decayed, or there is simply nowhere on the ground for a piece to go because the roof is directly underneath. With a crane the weight goes into the hook instead of the tree, and each section gets lifted clear and set down in the road or on a hard standing. We will only suggest one where it is genuinely the right call. Quite often it works out cheaper anyway, because a two day rigging job turns into a morning.

Working over roofs, conservatories and next door's garden

Before anything gets cut we walk the site and note every target: conservatory glass, greenhouse, gutters and ridge tiles, oil tanks, ponds, garden lighting, cables and the fence line. Then we plan the sequence so pieces always travel away from the fragile stuff, and we cut smaller sections than you might expect. A limb that could be taken in one is often taken in three, because a controlled small piece is worth more than a fast big one.

If we need to work over a boundary, drop a rope through next door's tree, or park a chipper across a shared drive, we knock and ask first. It costs nothing and it saves a lot of awkwardness on the day.

Access, parking and road closures

Cranes are heavy and they need firm, level ground with room for the outriggers and a clear swing path overhead. Overhead cables, soft verges, weak manhole covers and narrow lanes all matter, so we check them at the quote stage rather than on the morning. In a lot of cases the crane can sit out on the road and reach straight over the house, which is far less disruptive than trying to get it into a back garden.

Where that means blocking a road or taking out parking bays, there is paperwork involved with Cheshire East and it needs applying for in advance. We sort that side of it, and we will tell you up front if it adds a few weeks to the lead time so nobody is caught out.

Tickets, insurance and doing it properly

Aerial chainsaw work is not something to take on lightly, and it is regulated for good reason. We hold the relevant City & Guilds NPTC certificates for climbing, aerial rescue and chainsaw use at height, and we carry full public liability insurance. Ask to see either of those before you book, with us or with anyone else quoting. A genuine outfit will hand them over without blinking.

On crane assisted work there is a lift plan behind the scenes as well: estimated weight of each section, the working radius, how the sling is set, and who is calling the lift. Everybody knows their job before the first cut goes in. That planning is boring to talk about and it is exactly why nothing goes wrong.
