Home ground

Everything on this page is within ten or fifteen minutes of our yard. That means we can come and quote the same week, take on the small jobs, and be first on the scene after a storm. If you are in Astbury, Buglawton, Mossley, Eaton, Somerford, Marton, Bosley, Timbersbrook, North Rode, Smallwood, Hulme Walfield or Brereton Green, we are your local tree surgeon in the plainest sense.

Some of the oldest trees in England

The countryside around Congleton has trees that are genuinely famous. The Marton Oak, on the lane through Marton, is one of the oldest and largest oaks in the country, and the churchyard at Astbury has a yew that has been there for many centuries. We mention them because they are a reminder of what a tree can become if it is looked after, and because ancient and veteran trees need a different kind of care: minimal, patient work that removes what is dangerous and leaves everything else alone.

Most of what we do in the villages is less grand: hedges along the lanes, storm-damaged ash and beech on the higher ground towards Bosley and the Cloud, willows along the Dane and the Macclesfield Canal, and garden trees that have simply got too big for the plot. Same care, smaller trees.

Ash dieback in the lanes

Ash is everywhere in the hedgerows and field edges around Congleton, and ash dieback has hit it hard. A dying ash beside a lane, a drive or a field where stock graze becomes a hazard as the crown dries out and limbs start to fail. If you have ash on your boundary that is looking thin, we can tell you honestly whether it needs to come out, and if it does, take it down safely before it drops something on the road.

Protected trees and the council

All of these villages are in Cheshire East, and several, including Astbury, Marton and parts of Bosley and Buglawton, have conservation areas around their older cores. Trees inside a conservation area need six weeks' notice to the council before work, and a tree with a Preservation Order needs written consent. We check for you and handle the paperwork as part of the quote.

Questions people ask

Yes, and they are the easiest places for us to reach. Astbury, Buglawton, Mossley, Eaton, Somerford, Marton, Bosley, Timbersbrook, North Rode, Smallwood, Hulme Walfield and Brereton Green are all minutes from our yard.
Get it looked at. Ash dieback makes the timber brittle and the tree unpredictable as it declines, so it is safer to deal with it early. We will give you an honest view of whether it needs to come out and quote for the work if it does.
Yes. Long hedges along lanes and field boundaries are regular work for us, including laying back overgrown ones. We work outside the bird nesting season for anything heavy.
