Why leaving a stump causes problems

A stump looks harmless once the tree has gone, but it rarely stays that way. Grass grows up around it, someone catches a foot on it, and it takes the edge off a mower blade the first time you forget it is there. It also blocks whatever you wanted to do with that corner of the garden, whether that is a new tree, a patio or just a level lawn.

There is a slower problem too. A dead stump left in the ground feeds honey fungus and other root rots that can spread through the soil to healthy trees and shrubs nearby. Plenty of species also throw suckers up from the remaining roots. Cherry, poplar, lime and willow are all keen on it, and you end up strimming the same clump of shoots every few weeks for years.

Grinding versus digging the stump out

There are two ways to get rid of a stump. Digging it out means an excavator, cutting the main roots and lifting the whole lot clear. It works, but it makes a serious mess, it needs machine access right up to the spot, and you are left with a big hole and a stump to dispose of.

Grinding is the tidier option for most gardens. A rotating wheel set with tungsten teeth chews the stump away in layers, working down below ground level and out along the root flares. Nothing gets dragged out, so the lawn, borders and paving around it stay where they are.

How deep we grind, and why it matters

How far down we go depends on what you want to do with the ground afterwards. If you just want the stump gone and the lawn back, 150mm to 200mm below ground level is plenty. That gives you enough clean soil to re-turf or seed over the top and never know it was there.

Planting a replacement tree or shrub in the same spot needs more, so we take out the wider root plate as well, because leftover roots and grindings rob nitrogen from the soil as they break down. For a patio, shed base or driveway you want it deeper again, then backfilled and compacted properly so nothing settles under the slabs a year later. Tell us the plan when we come to quote and we will grind to suit it.

What happens to the grindings

Grinding leaves a pile of coarse chip and soil, usually more than people expect, because a stump takes up far more room once it is broken up. The standard finish is to rake it back into the hole and firm it down. It will settle over the following months, so it is worth topping up with topsoil later if you want a properly level lawn.

If you would rather it gone, we will barrow it out and take it with us. Weathered grindings also make a decent free mulch for borders and paths, so plenty of customers ask us to tip them round the back instead. Just give them a season to rot down before you spread them anywhere you are planting.

Getting the machine to the stump

Our grinder is a narrow access machine built for back gardens. As a rule of thumb, if there is a clear 76cm through the tightest gateway and a reasonably firm route to the stump, we can get to it. Steps, steep banks and very soft ground are the usual sticking points, though none of those is automatically a no.

If you are not sure, measure the narrowest gap and mention it when you ring. It saves a wasted visit, and if the machine will not fit we will say so straight away and talk through the alternatives.

Checking what is buried first

Grinding teeth do not care what they hit, so we always find out what is under the stump before we start. Gas, water, electric and telecoms runs, garden lighting cable, irrigation pipe and old land drains all tend to follow a boundary or take the shortest line to the house, which is often exactly where the tree went in.
